Suicide Comes Alive

We're back this week with another Top Contender's match as well as a mixed tag match previewing tonight’s Ultimate X. Before I begin, I'd just like to congratulate Jerry Lynn on being the first recipient of the TNAsylum Pioneer Award, a great award for a great competitor, and as a part of the Tribute to Jerry Lynn on June 8th, the debut of "Section X: Rewind" will be a look back at the career of Jerry Lynn.

Last week in the latest Top Contender's match, we saw recently relegated Petey Williams take on Zema Ion's replacement Joey Ryan and the returning Suicide. Now first of all, Ryan's involvement made no sense. In the previous top contenders match, Ion was the loser of the fall, meaning he should have been relegated to No Man's Land while Sonjay Dutt survived yet again and should have been involved in this match. I'm not sure if an unannounced rule is in place that if someone stays in the same bracket for a certain number of matches they are automatically relegated, or if TNA wanted a heel involved in the match and hoped people would forget that Zema Ion lost. Regardless, it's an issue with the consistency of the rules which should have been made clear.

The choice of TJ Perkins to play Suicide in my eyes is a great move. Perkins is a fantastic athlete and is very smooth and fluent in the moves he performs. He's also one of those performers who doesn’t seem to have much personality or presence as themselves, but once behind a mask can embody a character and make it stand out with its own unique style and mannerisms. And from what I’ve seen so far, he's done exactly that with Suicide.

The Match – As Ryan, Williams & Suicide entered, we were informed that X Division Champion Kenny King was a guest on commentary (which is a good use of his promo ability, and something I suggested they should do a few weeks ago). The match kicked off quickly when Suicide hit a running dropkick on Ryan that knocked him out of the ring, then reversing an attack by Petey into standing head-scissor/arm-bar which then led to a unique pin attempt that only kept Williams down for a two count. Suicide continued to garner offense with a headstand/hurricanrana combo but was then reversed by Williams who hung him on the second rope and gave him a dropkick in the back.

The match continued to be constant reversals, none of the 3 men could create a gap between their two opponents to gain enough momentum to finish the match. Ryan hit a nice looking pump handle throw but failed to capitalize and instead poured baby oil onto his chest before being met by a mid-air Suicide who gave the sleazy one a hurricanrana. Suicide scored a nice double submission when he trapped Ryan into an Indian Death Lock while holding Williams in an abdominal stretch.

After Petey escaped and they traded more offense, Suicide reversed an Irish Whip attempt from Ryan and hung himself in the ropes (which looked awesome). Ryan took a bump to the outside which led to a front flip from the apron by Suicide onto his two opponents. After another sequence of reversals, Petey was about to finish off Suicide with a Canadian Destroyer but was stopped in his tracks by a big boot from Ryan. Yet again, Ryan taunted to the crowd and when he attempted to attack Suicide, he was hit with a neck breaker followed by a pair of knees to the gut to score the pin for Suicide.

With the victory, Suicide is promoted to the Championship bracket to face Chris Sabin and Kenny King in tonight's Ultimate X match at Slammiversary, while Joey Ryan is relegated to No Man's Land. So, as requested by some in the last edition, let’s look at the standings in the X Division:

Championship Bracket
C. Kenny King
1. Chris Sabin
2. Suicide

Top Contenders Bracket
3. ???
4. Petey Williams
5. ???

No Man's Land
6. Joey Ryan
7. Sonjay Dutt
8. Zema Ion
9. Mason Andrews

I must say, Suicide looked great. From the handstand in the corner to the the hanging in the ropes, he had an awesome showing. With the moves he used, it looks like Perkin's aim is to try and give Suicide the comic book character feel. The moves were so quick and fluent that it didn’t seem like it was your average wrestler, but someone who wasn’t affected by fatigue and could just keep going and going at the same pace. The rope hang was the icing on the cake, it’s such a unique move and I’m sure I'm not the only guy who instantly thought of Spider-Man when I saw that. It was really good to see Perkin's performance as Suicide and hopefully he’ll be a top fixture in the X Division for the foreseeable future.

On this week’s Impact, we saw Taryn & Chris Sabin face Gail Kim & Kenny King in a mixed tag/double Slammiversary preview match. It was a solid match with some nice interactions between Sabin & King. I liked the post-match promo from Sabin being interrupted by an attack from King, and it was good to see Suicide's involvement in tonight’s match wasn’t forgotten with his save for Sabin, followed by the face-off between the two while Suicide was holding the title.

While the match didn’t receive much hype, especially the Ultimate X stipulation, it should be a very good match. As long as all three men stay healthy throughout the match (especially Sabin), then we could be in for a very good Ultimate X match that may very well steal the show. All three are very talented, and with Sabin being a veteran of Ultimate X and both King and Suicide being two of the best in-ring X Division wrestlers in the company, it should be a classic that will most certainly be enjoyable to watch. That's all from me so until next time, enjoy Slammiversary!
